Your first surf lesson in Essaouira: what to expect

An instructor running a surf lesson in the bay at Essaouira

Most people who stay with us have never stood on a surfboard. That’s normal, and it’s why the first lesson is built the way it is.

Before you get in

Lessons run in the morning, when the water is calmer. Your board and wetsuit are waiting for you, so there’s nothing to bring but swimwear and sun cream.

In the water

You start in the sheltered part of the bay, in a small group with an instructor from Essaouira. The aim of day one isn’t to look good. It’s to catch a few waves and get a feel for how the board moves.

After the session

By the afternoon the wind comes up and the bay fills with kites. Rest, wander into the medina, or just watch. In the evening everyone eats together at one table.
